Four New York City groups will receive a total of $1.65 million in funds from state bank settlements to assist in the development or expansion of community land trusts, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) announced today. It’s a small amount of money, but many hope it is a first step toward supporting a stronger community land trust movement.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the mayor intimated that he would try to intervene as the project goes through the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). He did not specify how he would do so, but he said he is in communication with the borough president and the local city council member, and is hopeful that will be able to convince the residents of Crown Heights to get behind this project.

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Activists unhappy with plans for two controversial Brooklyn projects shut down a public hearing on the developments Monday night, saying both proposals will exacerbate gentrification in the borough.

Opponents of both the Bedford-Union Armory plan in Crown Heights and the Pfizer site proposal in Williamsburg flooded a forum held at Borough Hall on the zoning changes requested for both projects before disrupting the hearing as officials began the proceedings.
